Recovering an ancient sailing boat made of laminated wood to build an ‘eco-sustainable oceanographic boat', which will ply the Mediterranean Sea divulging the beauty of our sea, to enhance and ultimately protect it.
Who we are
A project of MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo supported by PRADA group and UNESCO-IOC within the SEA BEYOND project
In the modern world of disposable goods, where the watchword is “ unbridled consumerism ”, buying a new boat is much easier than recovering an old one. The MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo, in line with its founding principles, wants to undermine this concept and aims to be an example for change. For this reason, the MuMa staff has recovered an old laminated wood sailboat from the 70s, an EC26 called “Cassiopea” to give it a new life, making it an eco-sustainable boat, with zero impact, self-sufficient as it is energy, water and food.
The boat is helmed by biologist Carmelo Isgrò , SEA BEYOND (PRADA Group and UNESCO-IOC), skipper and FIV (Italian Sailing Federation) sailing instructor, with many years of experience with regattas on dinghies and offshore sailing boats, including victories in two editions of the international “Siracusa-Malta” regatta.
The boat will land in wonderful places to talk about the beauty of nature but also in places degraded by man, to document and testify the seriousness of the problem of environmental pollution.
3R Model
The journey itself, conducted in the limited resources on board the sailing boat, will allow to spread in a pragmatic way the “ 3R model ” ( Reduce , Recycle and Reuse ) to promote circular economy practices .
The project is in line with the objective 14 of the Agenda 2030 which aims to protect and use in a sustainable way the resources of the oceans and seas. The boat will also be equipped with modern oceanographic research instruments that will allow to carry out monitoring and studies on marine environments and on anthropic impacts, thus becoming a ” small floating research laboratory”.
Only wood and metal
The boat has no fiberglass, and is built only with wood and metal, natural materials. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness on the issues of sustainability and the protection of the Sea in line with the United Nations “Decade of the Sea” program .
The sailing boat will sail the Seas carrying around the testimony of the Sperm Whale Siso (who died because of the plastic he ingested and an illegal net that got caught around his tail fin) and of the MuMa that was founded around the skeleton of this Sperm Whale. It will transmit the principles of Ocean Literacy through meetings, aimed especially at the new generations, which will be held in schools, Yacht clubs and ports where the boat will land around Italy , and subsequently throughout the Mediterranean.
